India has also developed and tested the K-4 missiles from the same family which has a range of 3500 kilometers. ![]() Under the SLBM family, missiles of various ranges have been developed including K-15 also called B-05 or Sagarika, which has a range of at least 750 kilometers. USS George Washington (SSBN-598) was the United Statess first operational ballistic missile submarine. There were 10 Nimitz -class carriers in service (CVN 68-77), each designed for 50-year service life with one mid-life refuelling and complex overhaul of their two A4W Westinghouse reactors. The family of indigenously developed Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs), sometimes referred to as K family missiles, are codenamed after Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the centre figure in India’s missile and space programmes who also served as the 11th President of India. It operated 81 nuclear-powered ships (11 aircraft carriers, 70 submarines 18 SSBN/SSGN, 52 SSN) with 92 reactors in 2017. These submarines can not only survive a first strike by the adversary but also can launch a strike in retaliation thus achieving Credible Nuclear Deterrence. The sea based underwater nuclear capable assets significantly increases the second strike capability of a country and thus boosts its nuclear deterrence. Officials said that the capability of being able to launch nuclear weapons from submarines has a great strategic importance in the context of achieving a nuclear triad, especially in the light of the ‘no first use’ policy of India.
